Quality Incentive Program

CMS developed the ESRD QIP to be the nation’s first pay-for-performance (also known as “value-based purchasing”) quality incentive program as mandated by the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA). The QIP is part of the payment system for dialysis providers. Dialysis providers must provide certain services and reach certain benchmarks of care in order to receive a full reimbursement from Medicare. The QIP is also used a way of gathering metric data on dialysis care across the country in order to improve care for patients and make the healthcare system more efficient.

DPC believes the ESRD Quality Incentive Program should incentivize all dialysis facilities to deliver optimal care to their patients. It should also provide consumers and physicians with useful and timely information on the quality of care each dialysis facility provides.
