By Yolonda Brisbane, DPC Grassroots Manager
Since I began my role as Grassroots Manager for Dialysis Patient Citizens (DPC) in April 2022, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the growth of something truly special—the Patient Ambassador Program. This network of DPC members from across the country is dedicated to amplifying their voices and making a real difference. Turning personal health challenges and difficult experiences into action, they advocate for better care for the kidney patient community.
In addition to their ongoing advocacy efforts, DPC Patient Ambassadors take part in Advocacy Day in Washington, DC, meeting with lawmakers to push for positive change for ESRD patients. They have letters to local newspapers published, testify at legislative hearings, and share their personal stories to influence policy. Discover how Patient Ambassador Arthur Hill of Indiana earned the DPC Advocacy Champion Belt—and see how you can become a powerful advocate too.
During a legislative hearing, Arthur powerfully conveyed his personal dialysis journey, revealing the challenges he faced and the urgent need for change. His heartfelt testimony not only captured the attention of lawmakers but also moved them to take meaningful action, directly contributing to the passing of Senate Bill 215. This bill now ensures access for dialysis patients under 65 to affordable Medigap Insurance plans.
DPC Patient Ambassadors like Gabriel Cooper (California), Ramona Banks (Minnesota), Marcine Spoke (Wisconsin), and Tony McDaniel (Arkansas), to name a few, have all had their letters to the editor published on the RESTORE Protections for Dialysis Patients Act, urging legislators to ensure access to private coverage for dialysis patients.
Whether in person, in writing, or by phone, DPC Patient Ambassadors’ voices are heard among policymakers, and their influence is growing stronger, state by state.
What sets this program apart is the sense of community we’ve built. Our Patient Ambassadors connect, share stories of resilience, and empower each other. Through monthly meetings, they step into leadership roles, guide discussions, and take ownership of DPC’s shared mission.
Whether you are new to DPC or have been with us for a while, I invite you to experience the transformative power of our thriving Patient Ambassador community. We are all in this together. We are waiting to welcome you and inspire you to become your own best advocate.
